Literally round the corner is this traditional old pub which is offering top quality pub meals along with an excellent pint of Harveys. The food’s freshly made on site and served with a smile - everyone I’ve sent there has come back with glowing reports. So if you’re after good food at a very reasonable price in a traditional pub setting, look no further. It also has a really lovely garden with lots of outside dining space. In recent years its fame has spread so I’d always suggest booking for weekends, particularly their spectacular Sunday roasts!

The Pelham Arms is up at the top of the High Street, near St Anne’s Church. A nice traditional pub with a good range of beers and wine, they also have a good kitchen. Again it’s wise to book at busy times.

Another pub with great food, in the Cliffe area of Lewes, this is named after the famous avalanche which killed eight people in 1836. The biggest challenge the modern visitor will encounter is its popularity these days!

Not that long ago, Bills was a greengrocer - the best greengrocer for miles, certainly, but a greengrocer. Now it’s a growing chain of foodie destinations, but Lewes is where it all started! This is a great place for a light lunch - I love their Eggs Florentine - but you will almost certainly have to queue at peak times. Well worth it though! They are also now open in the evenings throughout the week.

A fairly recent addition to Lewes gastronomy, The Lime Tree is a small restaurant close to the station which has proven to be a big hit with the local clientele. It offers a limited menu (one vegetarian, one fish and one meat alternative) using predominantly local produce.
